FAQ for Faculty of Science Researchers

Storage Capacity & Scalability

Q: How much storage do I need now—and in the future?
A: Our team can meet with you to discuss your current data footprint, expected data growth, and backup options to determine a recommended storage size.

Q: Can the system scale up easily?
A: Yes, we can easily scale up your storage allocation at any time. The system can expand to a total of 20 petabytes (PB). Note: 1 petabyte = 1000 terabytes (TB)

Q: Is there a minimum storage amount I can purchase?
A: Storage blocks are purchased by terabyte (TB). The smallest block that can be purchased is 1 terabyte (TB).

Cost & Billing

Q: What is the true cost (upfront and ongoing)?
A: The cost to you will be comprised of the actual storage block, and nominal setup and annual maintenance fees. Please see our Service & Infrastructure documentation for details (Link).

Q: What is the billing process?
A: Once the storage has been allocated and setup to the client's satisfaction, an invoice will be emailed to the client confirming the charges and asking for a FOAPAL that will be billed directly. Subsequent maintenance charges will be similarly billed annually at the start of year 2.

Performance & Reliability

Q: Is data synchronization with local computers required?
A: No manual syncing is not necessary when working directly on the storage appliance. Automated backup from local computers to central storage can be configured if needed.

Access & Security

Q: How can I manage access to my storage allocation?
A: Access groups with specific permissions (read, write, execute) can be created for folders or datasets. To request changes, contact the Science-IT team.

Q: How do users access my data?
A: Users can access data directly via the shared storage appliance.

Q: Can external collaborators access my storage?
A: Yes. Access for non-McGill collaborators can be arranged by granting permissions to specific datasets. External users must obtain affiliate accounts from McGill’s Central IT team.

Q: Can data be encrypted?
A: Yes, data can be encrypted. This requirement should be requested prior to configuration of your storage allotment.

Compatibility & Integration

Q: Which operating systems are supported?
A: Central storage supports Linux, Mac, and Windows operating systems.

Q: How do I access data remotely?
A: Remote access is available by connecting to the McGill network through VPN and mounting the shared storage.

Data Management & Migration

Q: How is data migration handled?
A: We can discuss where the current data is located and determine the most efficient way to move existing data to the new appliance.

Support & Maintenance

Q: What support is available?
A: The Science-IT is available to provide support should you have any questions or issues that may arise. They can be reached at this email

Q: Who is responsible for maintenance and troubleshooting?
A: The Science-IT team is responsible for maintenance and support of the storage appliance.

Compliance & Policy

Q: Do you follow McGill’s institutional policies?
A: Yes, we work closely with Central-IT to ensure we are following McGill policy and best IT practices. In addition, as this storage appliance is located on the McGill campus it follows the Cloud Directive.

Physical & Environmental Considerations

Q: Where will the storage be located?
A: The storage is located in McGill’s secure onsite data center.
