Mounting a storage device as a share on Windows 11

This document will walk you through mounting, i.e. creating a network shared drive on your Windows computer. Any file that you copy to that drive would then be on the storage server, and accessible to your colleagues and backed-up according to what your PI decided.

Requirements

You will require the following before starting.

  • You have been given an address of the type labname.psyc.mcgill.ca to connect to by an IT admin
  • You have been given a path of the type \mnt\somename\somedirectory to connect to by an admin
  • You are using a Windows 11 machine
  • You are on the McGill VPN. If you are not, you will not see our server

Procedure

  1. Launch File Explorer by going to the Start Menu --> File Explorer.
  2. In File Explorer, right-click on "This PC", and select "Map Network Drive". This will display the dialogue below. Map Network Drive Dialogue.
  3. In this dialogue, you will need to fill in the following fields:
    1. Drive: ( Q: above )
      • Select a letter that is not already used on your system. You will access the storage through this letter in the future. Do not use the drives A:, B:, C:, or R:
    2. Folder: ( \storage.sci.mcgill.ca\bartz-data above )
      • You will put the server name and path you were given here. Examples of what to put here is given below
      • You were given server: storage.sci.mcgill.ca, with path: mylab1. Use \\storage.sci.mcgill.ca\mylab1
      • You were given server: traclab.psyc.mcgill.ca with path: backups/project1. Use \\traclab.psyc.mcgill.ca\backups\project1
  4. Reconnect at sign-in ( unchecked above )
    • Check this only if you are on campus. If you are not, since you will need to be on the VPN at sign-in, this will not work.
  5. Connect using different credentials ( unchecked above )
    • Check this if your windows username is not your McGill email. On checking this, you will be asked to put in your McGill Credentials to map the share
  6. Click Finish. If this has worked, you will be able to see the files on the server in a new window.
