Mounting a storage device as a share on MacOS

This document will walk you through mounting, i.e. creating a network shared drive, on your Apple computer. Any file that you copy to that drive would then be on the storage server, and accessible to your colleagues and backed-up according to what your PI decided.

Requirements

You will require the following before starting.

  • You have been given an address of the type labname.psyc.mcgill.ca to connect to by an IT admin
  • You have been given a path of the type /mnt/somename/somedirectory/ to connect to by an admin
  • You are using an Apple device
  • You are on the McGill VPN. If you are not, you will not see our server

Procedure

  1. Open Finder, click on the Go menu, and select Connect to Server.
  2. In the "Server Address" field, type smb://labname_address/path that you were given. A few examples are shown below:
    • You were given server: storage.sci.mcgill.ca, with path: mylab1. Use smb://storage.sci.mcgill.ca/mylab1
    • You were given server: traclab.psyc.mcgill.ca with path: backups/project1. Use smb://traclab.psyc.mcgill.ca/backups/project1
  3. Click Connect
  4. You will be prompted for a username and password for the share. Please use your McGill email and associated password. You can also save those credentials in your keychain so that you do not have to type this every time you connect.
  5. Click Connect again. The share will appear in the Finder sidebar, and on your Desktop.
